Short version: Jupjup works on your computer. It has no accounts and never sends the pages you read or the words you learn anywhere. If you say yes, it sends a few anonymous daily numbers (like "12 words looked up") to help us improve it. That's it.
What Jupjup reads
To underline words and show subtitles, Jupjup reads the Korean text on pages you visit and the subtitles of videos you watch. This happens entirely inside your browser: the Korean analyzer and dictionary are part of the extension. Page text is never stored, logged, or sent anywhere.
What Jupjup stores
In your browser's extension storage, on your computer only:
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Words, grammar, and sentences you save, with your notes, the page address and video time they came from, and your review history | Your flashcards |
| Words and grammar you've marked as known | To find sentences at your level |
| Daily totals (reviews, cards saved, words learned) | Your progress charts |
| Your settings | To remember your preferences |
You can see, edit, export, or delete all of it from the extension's Library, Words, and Settings pages. Uninstalling the extension deletes it.
Anonymous counts (only if you say yes)
Jupjup asks once whether you'd like to share anonymous counts. It's off until you choose yes, and you can turn it off anytime in Settings. If on, it sends:
- Once a day: how many words you looked up, saved, and reviewed that day, and the week you installed Jupjup (so we can see whether people keep using it). Saves are also counted by kind of site, from a fixed list (YouTube, Netflix, other streaming, webtoons, news, Naver/Daum/blogs, social media, wikis, or "other websites"), never the site itself. No ID is attached, so these reports can't be linked to each other or to you.
- For the community counter: how many words you learned and sentences you saved, with a random install ID that isn't linked to you, so the counter can show how many learners were active this week.
It never sends which words, which sentences, which pages or videos, or anything that identifies you.
These counts, reports, and waitlist sign-ups are kept in a small database we run on Cloudflare. It doesn't store IP addresses.
Reporting a mistake
If you use "Something wrong?" on a word and press Send, Jupjup sends that word, its dictionary form, the sentence it appeared in, what you said was wrong, and your suggestion, so the dictionary can be fixed for everyone. Nothing is sent unless you press Send. If you also choose to use your own meaning, that fix is stored only in your browser.
Anki
If you use "Send cards to Anki", Jupjup sends your saved cards to the Anki app on your own computer through the AnkiConnect add-on (address 127.0.0.1). This never leaves your computer.
This website
If you join a waitlist (for teachers, phone reviews, or the Mac app), we keep the email address and the answers you give, only to contact you about that. Ask us anytime and we'll delete it. If you uninstall Jupjup, Chrome opens a short optional survey asking why; answers are anonymous. This site has no analytics, no cookies, and no third-party requests — even its fonts are served from here.
Permissions, explained
- Read pages you visit: to find Korean text and subtitles. Processed locally, never sent.
- Storage: to keep your cards, known words, and settings on your computer.
- Offscreen document: runs the Korean analyzer in the background so pages stay fast.
- Context menus, active tab, scripting: for the right-click "Look up" menu and keyboard shortcuts.
- Alarms: to send the optional anonymous counts and the optional Anki auto-send in the background.
- Optional access to 127.0.0.1:8765: only requested if you use "Send cards to Anki".
No selling, no ads, no analytics
Jupjup has no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party trackers. It never sells or shares data.
